Dynamic Earth was proud to once again play a key role in the 2025 Edinburgh Science Festival, continuing our longstanding partnership as a Festival Venue and Programming Partner.
Each April, we join forces with Edinburgh Science to deliver an engaging and varied lineup of events designed to inspire curiosity and spark meaningful conversations around Earth and environmental science and our planet’s future. The 2025 Festival took the theme of Spaceship Earth – a powerful reminder that our planet is not just a backdrop for life, but a complex, interconnected system we all share.

This year, Dynamic Earth hosted a vibrant and varied programme of 30 events aimed at audiences of all ages. Highlights included:

• Storytelling sessions for budding young explorers
• Astronaut dress-up and training experiences in our portable planetarium
• Coding workshops exploring melting polar ice and its impacts on our penguin pals
• Outdoor family sessions in Holyrood Park
• Drop-in activities focused on tropical rainforests, complete with real tropical specimens
• Ocean literacy experiences, featuring hands-on activities like piloting an underwater robot

‘Tiny Archives of Earth and Time’ outdoor exhibition.

The team from British Geological Survey brought hands-on activities.

Our Science Learning and Engagement Director tries out a VR experience as part of free activties.

Throughout the two-week festival, over 160 scientists joined us at Dynamic Earth to share their work with the public. Visitors had the chance to meet experts from a wide range of fields, including researchers and industry professionals from:

• The University of Edinburgh
• Heriot-Watt University
• Edinburgh Napier University
• The British Geological Survey
• The Scottish Association for Marine Science

Scientists from The University of Edinburgh hosted free activities on the Dynamic Earth Stratosphere.

The team from British Geological Survey held free activities for visitors.

More than 12,000 people took part in at least one of our Festival activities this year, making it one of our busiest and most impactful programmes to date. This engagement reflects our mission to empower people of all ages with understanding and empathy for the Earth with year-round impactful programming.
