As part of National Science Week, Dynamic Earth delivered Scotland’s largest hands-on careers event for young people focussing on planet Earth and sustainability. Over 1200 students from 20 schools joined us across Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th of March!

Primary and secondary learners had the opportunity to meet inspirational scientists and engineers with hands-on activities representing more than 30 scientific partner organisations from academia, industry and government as part of our exhibitor showcase. Pupils were then able to hear the early career journeys of technologists, volcanologists and climate activists in an interactive panel discussion chaired by our Science Learning and Engagement Director. Learners took a trip to our Planetarium with a presenter-led show ‘Don’t Panic!’ exploring climate change. These interactive activities were specifically designed to inspire learners and broaden their understanding of possible STEM futures.

Highlights of the event included learners exploring the world of robotics with a robot dog; flying drones through an obstacle course; trying out welding, motor engineering and wind turbine maintenance through virtual reality; simulating landslides; driving diggers in commuter simulations and getting hands-on with real ocean creatures and CubeSat satellites!

Dynamic Earth welcomed more than 150 scientists on site across the two-day event. This means that, over the past year, we’ve welcomed more than 300 scientists on-site to meet with visitors as part of our public programmes!

Dr Claire Motion and Joe Walker from Cirrus Logic, together with Dr Julia Crummy from the British Geological Survey and Sustainability Activist and Scottish Influencer of the Year, Laura Young, delivered a suite of inspiring panel sessions exploring how their passion for science at school led them to their careers in STEM today. This was chaired by Dynamic Earth’s Director for Science Learning and Engagement, Conor Ellis. The session gave learners the chance to ask questions directly to the panel about their STEM journey, introducing some brilliant topics for the panel to discuss such as the influence of social media on STEM careers, and how to feel optimistic about our planet’s future despite our current climate.

Through our Careers Showcase we hope to show learners the huge variety of pathways that they can pursue- whether that be university courses, apprenticeships, or going straight into the workplace. We’re proud to showcase the different opportunities available to learners to pursue a career in STEM and sustainability, and ultimately to support and protect our planet.
